Primeval forest Perućica is one of the last remaining wildlife sanctuaries in Europe. It is on the UNESCO tentative list as a valuable natural asset. The primeval forest is under the highest level of protection; any visit is strictly prohibited except in cases when it is announced, approved and monitored by the authorized staff of National Park Sutjeska.
It extends over an area of 1434 ha on the tri-border area of Maglić, Volujak and Zelengora. It is intersected by numerous small and big crystal clear and drinkable streams, of which the central stream is Perućica, after which it was named. The richness of flora and fauna is unprecedented, so few visitors are fortunate enough to have a close encounter with indigenous species of wild animals, small and big, which makes each visit especially interesting. What visitors find impressive is the age of the forest populations with extremely tall trees, some of which reached the incredible 58 meters.
Waterfall Skakavac is in the heart of the primeval forest. It is 73 m high and goes down vertically over a cliff, creating a very strong air current at the foot of the cliff, so it is almost inaccessible, especially in spring, when the snow melts fast. This unique place is hidden from the civilization and jealously guarded since 1952, even before the oldest national park in BIH is established, when its value was recognized.

TOUR DESCRIPTION:
The trip usually starts in the morning by gathering in front of the hotel Mladost or the restaurant Komlen from where we go to the starting point – Dragoš sedlo (1260 mamsl) by an off-road vehicle, which is a 40-50 minute drive. Along the way we visit a few lookouts on the edge of primeval forest Perućica that offer a beautiful view of the primeval forest, waterfall Skakavac and the mountain massifs of Maglić, Volujak, Zelengora, and Bioč. The trail is about 8-9 km long. It starts from the pass – lookout Dragoš Sedlo, and goes into the heart of the primeval forest, leading us through different zones of forest populations and ages, across small and large streams with numerous natural obstacles and unique scents of flora. The trail takes us through the heart of the primeval forest to the pass Tunjimir from where we go down to the canyon of the stream Suški potok which finally takes us to the Sutjeska Canyon. We often have the privilege to meet the wild inhabitants of the primeval forest in their habitat, following the traces that the mysterious inhabitants leave behind.

What to bring
Hiking clothes and shoes, warm clothes in case the weather is cold, a water bottle, and snacks to eat on a break. You can bring hiking poles (optional). From May to June it is recommended that you take a mosquito repellent.
