Trnovačko Lake

Trnovačko – Volujsko Lake is a heart-shaped morphological phenomenon, a glacial lake in the foot of the beautiful massifs of Volujak, Maglić and Bioč. The lake itself is in a kind of amphitheater, surrounded with mountain peaks Trnovački Durmitor, Trzivka, and Kom. It is placed at an elevation of 1517 mamsl. This is the most popular destination for both the professional mountaineers and for the recreationists because the trail is easy and there are beautiful panoramic points almost along the whole route. The additional benefit is that the lake is a perfect place for swimming, unique in many ways, which you can see for yourself right away. This is especially evident during the hot summer days when the refreshment in the emerald lake after a fulfilling hike can hardly be compared to similar activities. Even though it belongs to the territory of Nature Park ‘Piva’, the most approachable way to the lake is from National Park Sutjeska, from the starting point Prijevor (1670 mamsl), then across Suva jezerina (1350 mamsl) all the way to the ‘amphitheater’ (1520 mamsl) from where you can see the mountain jewel.

TOUR DESCRIPTION:

The trip usually starts in the morning by gathering in front of the hotel ‘Mladost’ or the restaurant ‘Komlen’ from where we go to the starting point Prijevor by an off-road vehicle, which is a 50-60 minute drive. Along the way we visit a few lookouts on the edge of Perućica rainforest that offer a beautiful view of the rainforest, waterfall Skakavac and the mountain massifs of Maglić, Volujak, Zelengora and Bioč. Upon arrival at Prijevor, after we look around, we refresh ourselves at a nearby water spring and head towards the lake. Length of the trail is approximately 5 km in one direction. Upon arrival at the lake, after an hour and a half of hiking, we spend some time there swimming, taking photos, drinking coffee or tea… or simply lounging on the carpet of mountain grasses and enjoying the captivating view. We take the same route on the way back.
