Volujak – Hiking

Volujak is a mountain paradise on the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and occupies a central place in National Park Sutjeska. Its position is unique because it leans on the canyon of the Sutjeska (which originates on its slopes), which separates it from the massif of Zelengora, and on the other side the canyon of Suški potok separates it from Maglić and Perućica, while in the southeastern direction it leans on mountain Bioč in Montenegro. It is easy to conclude that Volujak abounds in lookouts that offer views in all directions, so from here you can see Maglić, Bioč, Durmitor, Lebršnik, Zelengora, Čvrsnica, Bjelašnica. We come across the second highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina – Velika Vlasulja (2336 mamsl), which is also the highest one on Volujak. This mountain is the perfect compromise between the difficulty of the ascent and the highest point of hiking, because compared to others, its mountain slopes are much gentler.

TOUR DESCRIPTION:

The trip usually starts in the morning by gathering in front of the hotel Mladost or the restaurant Komlen from where we go to the starting point – Papin Do (1450 mamsl) by an off-road vehicle, which is an hour drive. Upon arrival at the starting point, after a short preparation, we head towards the peak Velika Vlasulja. It is a gradual uphill with an excellent view of the massif of Zelengora. We come across a water spring which is a great opportunity to refill our water bottles with enough water for the whole day. We occasionally take a break during the ascent, and after about two and a half hours, we reach the top Velika Vlasulja (2336 mamsl). There is a border stone from the time of Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and we can see a stone bunker from the same period, which still resists time. The top offers an excellent view of the surrounding peaks. After a half an hour break when we rest and have a snack, we slowly descend the mountain ridge towards the peak Studenac. From here (after a short break) we descend towards the final point of hiking from where a vehicle takes us back to Tjentište. The total length of the trail is about 14 km.
